The Norwegian Atlantic Committee
The Norwegian Atlantic Committee is an independent, non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting knowledge and informed debate about transatlantic security, international cooperation, and Norway’s role in global affairs. Since it was established in 1955, the Committee has developed into a central platform for dialogue on foreign, defense, and security policy, with a particular emphasis on the transatlantic relationship.
*Most of the Committee's activites are organized and written in Norwegian.
The Committee’s core mandate is to contribute to increased understanding of international security dynamics, including NATO cooperation, European and transatlantic relations, and broader geopolitical developments. It seeks to provide fact-based information and facilitate open, balanced discussions on complex global issues. By doing so, the organization supports democratic engagement and strengthens public awareness of matters that directly affect Norwegian and international security.
A key aspect of the Committee’s work is the organization of a wide range of activities and events. These include public seminars, conferences, roundtable discussions, and lectures featuring leading experts, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. Many of these events are open to the public and are designed to encourage dialogue across professional and political boundaries. In addition, the Committee places strong emphasis on educational initiatives, offering study programs, courses, and simulations for students and young professionals interested in international relations and security policy.
The Norwegian Atlantic Committee also engages in publishing and communication efforts. Through reports, articles, and digital content, it disseminates knowledge and analysis to a broader audience. These resources are intended to make complex topics more accessible while maintaining a high level of academic and professional rigor.
The Committee’s primary target audience includes students, educators, policymakers, members of the armed forces, journalists, and others with an interest in international affairs. At the same time, it strives to reach the general public by presenting timely and relevant topics in an accessible manner. Particular attention is given to engaging younger generations, recognizing their importance in shaping future perspectives on security and cooperation.
Organizationally, the Norwegian Atlantic Committee operates with a small professional secretariat, including teh scretary general, responsible for daily activities, supported by a board that provides strategic direction and oversight. The Committee collaborates closely with national and international partners, including academic institutions, governmental bodies, and civil society organizations. This network-based approach enables it to maintain both independence and relevance in a rapidly changing global landscape.
Through its work, the Norwegian Atlantic Committee serves as a bridge between research, policy, and the public. Its mission remains grounded in fostering informed discussion, strengthening transatlantic ties, and contributing to a deeper understanding of the security challenges and opportunities facing Norway and its partners.
Furthermore, the Youth Atlantic Treaty Association (YATA) Norway, an organization for students and young professionals, is orgnized under the Norwegian Atlantic Committee.
